Day 23: Straining...

Today I started with only a small supply of water. The water at the camp site was quite smelly and I decided to buy bottled water instead of trying to filter the water from the camp site.

From the start I wasn't all that motivated. In the night cats and dogs in the neighborhood had made some "music" so my sleep had been interrupted a few times.

While the first part of todays cycling was quite nice, it was already strenuous starting with some steep climbs.

For a long time I wondered why I did not make much progress. But the reason where the many climbs. I never got much higher than 200m of altitude, but at least three times I had to perform the climb from almost 0m to 200m. Unlike Transfagarasan where I was prepared for this, I had expected a more or less relaxing cruise along the sea side for today and was somewhat frustrated.

Also road 9 I was following is quite a big road with a lot of fast driving cars and not a lot places to stop. I had hoped that would improve after Warna since there is a piece of Autobahn in parallel. And as expected the traffic dropped a bit.

But whenever I approached a place that looked like a nice picnic site to use for a siesta there was already a girl standing there. In the first case I still wondered what she was doing there in a remote place without a car, but when this repeated it became clear, that this is a bulgarian street prostitution zone. After some more cycling I finally found a spot for a short picnic with a nice view back to Warna:

At the end of the road there was a police checkpoint and for once I was not stopped. But my happiness about this soon ended when I was stopped by police 20 minutes later. Again the same conversation I have had so many times now.

I then decided to keep the tour short for today and ended in Obsor. This is a more quiet place with lots of smaller hotels and a very relaxed mood. I quite like it. And I got a room with a bacony looking at the sea:

For tomorrow the routing tells me that it is a bad idea to continue cycling along the sea side. After todays experience I tend to agree that this might be the case. But still I'm not sure, that a 100km detour is a better idea. Well we'll see... I am not sure what to do yet.
