Day 55: Into the alps

This morning I left Turin. While traffic wasn't all that bad, finding a way out with many roads disallowing cycling was sometimes painfull. Once I got through Rivoli it got better.

In Susa the ascent started for real. I had to stop often to rest.

Looking back at Susa

First the mountains still were covered with plants (allthough many seem to have died in the summer).

Later the higher mountains without any vegetation became visible.

Somewhere in between I passed the Fort di Exilles:

Now I am on a camp site at 1100 meters above sea level. So tomorrow I will have to climb another 650m to cross the pass. Which is less than today, but the ascents at the top will probably be harder than the relatively steady climbs of today. When crossing the top of the pass I will also enter France. Probably I'll cycle towards Avignon afterwards.

The temperatures have now fallen to 21° and there is a strong wind. When resting after a steep climb it can now get cold when leaving the velomobile. I also noticed that the sun heats up the hull quite a lot, so inside it is still much warmer. The cold air is only refreshing on the fast descents.
