Day 4: The day the tour really started

Sunset at yesterdays campsite

Somehow leaving Germany really started the tour for me.
While crossing the border was somewhat underwhelming (I was preparing to show off my vaccination certificate and handle all possible discussions) since on a Sunday morning there is no one around in Guben / Gubin. The border is just a bridge you have to cross. Open borders are great achievement, but in that moment I would have preferred an official stamp;)

But starting in the beginning: When I got up it was already hot and I started sweating before even starting to cycle. So I decided to fill both water bags to the max and take 6 liters of lightly salted water with me. Despite some clouds during the day I consumed all of it. So for the real deserts I probably need more. People always ask me if my velomobile can swim. But I guess I should use it the other way round and turn it into a tub :)

After a nice breakfast made by the campsite I packed my stuff. Everything fit perfectly. Including the tire I had hung to the side of the velomobile yesterday. There was so much room available that I just stood there and wondered what I had forgotten. But nothing came to mind so I set of. Cycling was so easy and fast that I took some time to notice that I was going the wrong way. But it turned out to be just a small detour.

Apart from that nothing really interesting happened during the tour. The polish people all seem to be really friendly. Always when a car took longer than expected to overtake I looked to the left into smiling faces (or a smartphone camera. I guess I have never been filmed as often as today).

The towns are nice but a bit run down and the street quality varies a lot. Often the right side of the road has detoriated a lot. But driving in the middle of the road requires a constant lookout for fast cars approaching from behind.

One strange thing is that there is not a single campsite along todays route in Poland. There are many to the north and south, but nothing in between. So I ended up booking an apartment. Normally breakfast is offered, but since I booked short term on a sunday the first information I got, was that I couldn't get breakfast since they hadn't bought anything for breakfast. But 20 minutes later this arrived as a gift of the house:

... and the second layer is not even visible :)

I am very happy I don't have to start cycling with only a minimal breakfast :)

  1. Awesome! Sounds like you're having fun! You should figure out the self timer of your camera though so you can be on the pictures and your beard growth is documented. That trip is gonna be the more exciting the further you go. So godspeed and safe travels

    Cheers
